Inscribed by the author on the front free endsheet. This work recounts a trip across the plains and Continental Divide into Wyoming, Idaho, Utah - with a great description of Utah and the Mormons (p.149-188) - and Montana - with description of the mines, the Bloody Bozeman, and the Montana Vigilantes - a nice western travel narrative. Alexander Kelly McClure (1828-1909) worked as a newspaper publisher and a lawyer, and was active in Republican politics. In the 1860s he invested in western mining, and as a representative of the Philadelphia-based Montana Gold and Silver Mining Company, he traveled and worked as superintendent of the mill that was built with company funds on the Oro Cache vein in Montana Territory.
