Image of the Hance trail looking up the Canyon to the rim. John Hance is thought to be the first non-Native to reside in the Big Ditch. "Early in June 1892 Moran, Jackson, and their companions reached the rim of the canyon. There they were met by the legendary guide and raconteur, John Hance. Hance had arrived in the canyon a decade earlier in search of mining opportunities he had quickly received that tourism would prove more profitable." - 'Thomas Moran' by Nancy K. Anderson (p.125)
William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) was one of the most prolific (and maybe the most famous) of Western photographers. During his lengthy career, Jackson photographed numerous views of the West between Nebraska and California, from cliff dwellings to industrial urban centers.
