Salt Lake City: The Deseret News Office, 1870. First Edition. 21pp. Octavo [19.5 cm] Lacks wrappers. Small withdrawn stamp at foot of title page. About very good. Item #8621

This short work recounts the debate held at the Tabernacle on August 12, 13, and 14, 1870, between John Philip Newman, who was at the time Chaplain of the United States Senate and one of the foremost preachers of Washington, D.C, and the Apostle Orson Pratt, on plural marriage. Newman's appearance in Salt Lake City to debate the question of polygamy was a national topic. Probably never before, nor since, has so much been said in such a short time by non-Mormon presses on a question respecting Mormonism. Flake/Draper 5807.
