Inscribed by Abbey on the front free endsheet: "for Jeanine - Edward Abbey - Boulder '82." This edition contains illustrations by Abbey, that only appear in the Peregrine Smith printing. Black and white images by Gibbs Smith. Abbey spent two consecutive summers in Arches National Monument (now National Park) as a seasonal ranger and came back later for a third summer. He kept journals of his summers in Arches and used those as well as journals and notes from other experiences in the canyon country to write this celebrated work. Ford 190b.
