This University of Arizona press edition contains a new preface by Abbey and new illustrations by Lawrence Ormsby and Carol Thickstun. Abbey spent two consecutive summers in Arches National Monument (now National Park) as a seasonal ranger and came back later for a third summer. He kept journals of his summers in Arches and used those as well as journals and notes from other experiences in the canyon country to write this celebrated work. Ford 190c.
