Black Sun was retitled 'Sunset Canyon' for a British audience. This is Abbey's fourth published novel which tells the story of a fire lookout at the North Rim who falls in love with a woman half his age, and is wrongly blamed for her disappearance in the Grand Canyon. Abbey likely gained inspiration and ideas for this work, while he worked four seasons as the fire lookout at the North Rim. Largely panned on its release, nevertheless, Abbey considered this work one of his favorites. Edward Abbey (1927-1989) was a celebrated author, essayist, conservationist, noted pain-in-the-ass, and in many ways the father (or at the very least, uncle) of the modern environmental movements.
