Inscribed by Abbey on the front free endsheet. Collection of autobiographical and philosophical essays, using water and river-running (and adjacent activities) as a starting point of reflection. Written between 1978 and 1982 this is an emerging classic on western waters and living in the West. Edward Abbey (1927-1989) was a celebrated author, essayist, conservationist, noted pain-in-the-ass, and in many ways the father (or at the very least, uncle) of the modern environmental movements.
