Inscribed by Abbey on the front free endsheet: "to my favorite aunt with much love Ned, Indiana 1969." Abbey grew up in the western Pennsylvania town of Indiana. Additionally signed by Abbey beneath: "Edward Abbey Tucson Arizona 1968." Exceptional double-signed copy of the naturalist standard work. Both inscriptions are early 1968 (year of publication) and 1969. Abbey spent two consecutive summers in Arches National Monument (now National Park) as a seasonal ranger and came back later for a third summer. He kept journals of his summers in Arches and used those as well as journals and notes from other experiences in the canyon country to write this celebrated work. Ford 190a.
