Nice collection of images documenting the development of the ski industry through the 1940s and 1950s in one of America's premier Western ski towns. Views of the mountain, main street, lifts, skiers, jumps, and runs. Commercial skiing first came to the area in the immediate postwar years and has come to be one of the driving forces of the local economy. Aspen is famous the world over for its powder and culture. Harold Sanborn crisscrossed the state of Colorado (and surrounding western states) for decades beginning in the 1920s, he personally took thousands of images, that he would then offer as souvenir tourist cards.
John J.B. Schutte was born in Aspen and was a lifelong hobbyist photographer who received recognition for his Aspen and Roaring River valley images.
