Siigned by the author on the title page. In this biography, Drury attempts to give a voice to a 'pro-white' or 'pro-treaty Indian. Lawyer played a major role in the Nez Perce-U.S. Government negotiations and treaties. He was vilified in the 1850s and '60s, and is still sharply criticized today. As a strong advocate of Whitman, Spalding, and other Protestant missionaries, Drury felt that Lawyer was simply being realistic. Clark & Brunet 74.
