History May Be Searched in Vain: A Military History of the Mormon Battalion

Spokane, WA: The Arthur H. Clark Company, 2006. First Edition. 314pp. Octavo [24 cm] Blue colored cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and the backstrip. Fine. Frontier Military Series XXV (25). Item #7794

Warmly inscribed by the author on the half-title: "June 1, 2006. To Hugh, Best Wishes - Sherman L. Fleek Lt. Col. US Army (Ret). It is important to place the Mormon Battalion fully into the context of the Mexican War itself. Many authors have failed to adequately link the battalion's history with Brigadier General Stephen W. Kearny's Army of the West or the strategic political and military dramas unfolding in Washington, Texas, northern Mexico and Mexico City. Previous writers and historians of the battalion, for the most part, have been silent on the causes of the war and the campaigns in Texas and Mexico, and say little of the campaign in Texas and Mexico, and say little of the campaign for New Mexico and California, where the Mormon Battalion played a small but essential part.
