This pamphlet is one of the most influential and important works produced by any of the Mormon factions, and it continues to be a standard source book for students of Mormonism, since Whitmer was intimately associated with Joseph Smith during the last stages of the writing of the Book of Mormon, attested to the truth of the book as one of the Three Witnesses, and was prominent in the councils of the church down to the time of his excommunication in the spring of 1838.
