"Highlights of History. The history of Utah is the history of the Mormons. Although the Spanish conquistadors may have visited what is now Utah as early as 1519, the first true exploration was by Father Escalante in 1776. In 1824, Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake, and by 1830 trappers were using the trail across Utah from Santa Fe to California. Brigham Young led the Mormons to the Great Basin in 1847. In the spring of 1848, a plague of crickets threatened the first crops but the sea gulls descended on them. A monument to the gulls stands in Salt Lake City, and it is against the law to harm these birds in Utah. While the Mormons were forced to flee from the midwest, a battalion of Mormon soldiers were making history for the very country whose citizens harassed them." - from the description booklet.
