Trevor Southey (1940-2015) was born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1940, descended from European colonists who settled in Cape Town, South Africa, in the 17th century. He converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after hearing four missionaries singing in harmony and upon learning of the Mormon belief in the divinity of man. His formal art training included two years at Brighton College of Art in Sussex, England; a year in Durban, South Africa; and two degrees from Brigham Young University. (1967,1969). He taught at BYU through 1977, and then set out on a four decade plus career in the visual arts, primarily his distinctive, and celebrated, figurative paintings.
