Volume 2 of the Southwest Historical Series. "While marching across the plains and mountains of the Far West during the late fifties, Eugene Bandel, of the Sixth infantry, recorded his adventures in letters and a journal, which he wrote for the information of his parents and friends in distant Prussia. these manuscripts were carefully preserved by his father and mother, and were finally returned to him in the United States. There, after his death, they were treasured by his children, one of whom, Olga Bandel, first appreciated their historical value. The letters and journal, which are now deposited in the California State Library, tell a continuous story of Bandel's experiences as a soldier in the United States army and as an employee at Benicia Arsenal, California." - Clark & Brunet 21.
