Edited, with introduction and notes by LeRoy R. and Ann W. Hafen. Seventh volume in the well-received series 'Far West and the Rockies.' Heap kept a journal of his trip through the west as part of Beale's expedition searching for a central railroad route. The party went from Fort Atkinson along the Santa Fe trail passing near (old) Bent's Fort across Colorado and entering Utah and passing the remains of Fort Robidoux and across the desert on the Old Spanish Trail through Santa Clara, Las Vegas and on to Los Angeles. The trip through central Colorado and Utah was one of the first detailed accounts of the area. Clark/Brunet 118.
