In 1836, the Hudson's Bay Company assigned ordained Anglican priest, Herbert Beaver, to serve as the first chaplain to the Fort Vancouver community. Beaver, despite his surname, was a notoriously bad fit for a well-established fur trading community like Fort Vancouver. Arriving in September of 1836, Beaver was shocked by the conditions of frontier life. This work offers a firsthand account of life in early Oregon Country by chaplain.
