The book is a first-hand account of Dana's two-year sea voyage starting in 1834, traveling from Boston around Cape Horn to Mexican California on the merchant ship Pilgrim. If not the most widely read book on California, this title certainly would rank high on any list. his work offers an excellent account of the author's adventures and is widely regarded as one of the great California books and is noted for being very readable.
