Great image of Fred Harvey's legendary lodge on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, El Tovar. This is the unofficial companion piece to Thomas Moran's chromolithograph 'The Grand Canyon of Arizona from Hermit Rim Road.' It was also produced for the Santa Fe Railroad, and like this, was produced to hang in Santa Fe Railroad offices and also to sell to tourists.
This striking work that was originally painted a year after Fred Harvey opened the doors to the now legendary El Tovar Hotel, on the edge South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This opulent and faux rustic resort offered visitors an opportunity to view the natural wonder of the Grand Canyon while living in the lap of luxury. The artist of this work, Louis Benton Akin (1868–1913) was a prominent early 20th-century American painter and illustrator best known for his vivid depictions of the Grand Canyon and Hopi cultural life. Originally a sign painter from Portland, Oregon, he went on to study in New York City before dedicating his career to the landscape and Indigenous cultures of Northern Arizona. For a time he lived at El Tovar.
