Pascoe] stamped in gilt at the foot of the front board. Thomas Pascoe was the developer of the Fremont Hotel. A nice association copy. Item #11038
Short illustrated history of John C. Fremont's time in California that was printed for the Fremont Hotel. The Fremont Hotel was located in the Bunker Hill neighborhood of Los Angeles, and was built and designed by the architect John C. Austin and developed by Thomas Pascoe. Designed in the Mission style, it had nearly had some 100 rooms. It opened on September 9, 1902, and was named after John C. Fremont. When newly built it was billed as "the newest and most elegantly appointed family hotel in Los Angeles.” At its grand opening celebrations the hotel held dinners in tribute to Fremont, and Fremont's widow, Jessie, was the first registered guest.
George Wharton James (1858-1923) was an author, lecturer and photographer who made his home in Pasadena and was active in the late 19th century and early 20th century. He was a member of the Arroyo community known for his studies on Native Americans, James was a prolific author who penned more than forty books.
John Charles Fremont (1813-1890), was an American military officer and one of the great American explorers. Fremont mapped most of the Oregon Trail and during the 1840s, that era's penny press accorded Frémont the epithet. 'The Pathfinder.' Fremont was also the first to run for President as a Republican candidate.
