First Editions. 2 volumes. 352, 397pp. Octavo [23 cm] Publisher's red pebbled cloth with decorative blind stamping to boards and the title gilt on the backstrip. Complete with all plates and woodcuts, including the eleven color lithograph plates and the folding map. All are bright and in nice condition. Very good. With gentle wear to boards and cosmetic splitting to joints of volume two.

This important narrative describes Möllhausen's work with the Pacific Railroad Survey under Lieutenant Amiel Whipple, investigating a potential route along the 35th parallel in 1853, which took the expedition across northern New Mexico and Arizona, and through the Mohave. Heinrich Balduin Möllhausen (1825–1905) was a noted German traveler, artist, and novelist who became one of the most significant chroniclers of the 19th-century American West. He is renowned for his realistic portrayals of frontier life, indigenous cultures, and North American landscapes.
