Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was one of the principal members of the Beat Generation in the 1950s and later an icon of the counter-culture movement in the 1960s. His poem, The Howl, is the best-known single work of the Beat Poets. He published a number of books of poetry receiving the National Book Award in 1974 for The Fall of America. Ginsberg was a practicing Buddhist who took part in numerous protests against imperialism, militarism, sexual repression, and censorship.
