Bingham Canyon, located southwest of Salt Lake City, was first settled in August 1848 by Thomas and Sanford Bingham. The mine's history dates back to 1848 when the Bingham brothers first settled the area, with mining operations officially starting in the late 19th century. The Bingham Mine is the largest open pit mine in the world, as well as, the largest human excavation. Volume 11 - Number 1 in USU's monograph series. Uncommon.
