Semi-autobiographical work about a man, who refuses to submit to modern commercial society, and walks from Arizona to West Virginia. Abbey considered this novel his "fat masterpiece." This was the last novel published in Abbey's lifetime. Edward Abbey (1927-1989) was a celebrated author, essayist, conservationist, noted pain-in-the-ass, and in many ways the father (or at the very least, uncle) of the modern environmental movements.
