The Latter Day Saints: A Study of the Mormons in the Light of Economic Conditions

London: Williams & Norgate, 1912. First Edition. 363pp. Octavo [23 cm] Blue cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine. Item #10296

This uncommon work by the American journalists Ruth Kauffman and Reginald Wright Kauffman reflects their belief as Marxists that the Mormon church was a victim of a capitalistic society. The Kauffmans' intention was to summarize the widespread anti-Mormon sentiment that appeared in the American press during the late nineteenth century. They believed that capitalism was an unethical system of compulsion and domination. They were unlikely allies of the Saints and their work and brought an unprecedented perspective to the Church. Flake/Draper 4526.
